At 2,050 metres above the Beas River, Manali has always drawn two very different crowds — those who arrive to push limits, and those who arrive to find quiet. Both walk away satisfied. Once a remote trading post on the ancient Silk Route connecting India to Central Asia, Manali today is India's undisputed adventure capital — a town where snowbound passes and river gorges begin at the edge of the main street.
The old quarter of Manali — the original village of stone-and-wood homes, apple orchards, and centuries-old temples — still exists, largely undisturbed behind the tourist bustle of Mall Road. Hadimba Devi Temple rises from a cedar forest so dense the sunlight arrives only in filtered strips. The Beas River, running ice-cold year-round, sets the acoustic backdrop for everything. Above all of it, the Rohtang Pass at 3,978 metres marks the threshold between the green Kullu Valley and the bone-dry high desert of Lahaul — a crossing that has defined this town's identity for generations.

Best Time to Visit Manali
Summer (April to June) is the peak season and for good reason: temperatures hold between 10°C and 25°C, Rohtang Pass typically opens in May, and the river runs full and rapid — ideal for white-water rafting. Hotels fill fast; book a month ahead during May weekends.
Monsoon (July to September) brings heavy rainfall that occasionally closes mountain roads, but the Kullu Valley turns an impossible shade of green and the rivers roar. Adventure activities are limited, but the landscape rewards photographers willing to accept some unpredictability.
Autumn (October to November) is a quiet, confident season. Apple harvest fills the orchards, skies clear completely after September rains, and the high passes offer some of their sharpest mountain views before snow closes them for winter.
Winter (December to March) is Manali's second peak, driven by snow. Rohtang closes, but Solang Valley becomes a snowfield close enough to drive to. January temperatures drop to -10°C at higher elevations — dress accordingly and book heated accommodation in advance.
How to Reach Manali
By Road
The 550 km Delhi-to-Manali journey takes twelve to fourteen hours by overnight Volvo bus — a standard and well-serviced route with multiple daily departures from Kashmiri Gate ISBT. Private cabs offer more flexibility for families and small groups. Our Manali Honeymoon Package includes door-to-door Volvo transfers with professional mountain drivers.
By Air
Bhuntar Airport (Kullu-Manali Airport) sits 50 km from Manali town and accepts limited daily flights from Delhi. From the airport, taxis reach Manali in roughly ninety minutes. Mountain weather causes frequent cancellations — always book refundable tickets and plan buffer days at either end.
By Rail
No direct rail link serves Manali. The nearest major railway stations are Chandigarh (310 km) and Pathankot (325 km), both with good connectivity from Delhi and Mumbai. From either station, buses and taxis complete the mountain approach.
Local Cuisine to Try
Manali's food landscape spans reliable Tibetan momos (served everywhere, quality varying dramatically between addresses) to the regional Himachali cooking that most visitors never seek out. Siddu — steamed bread stuffed with poppy seeds and ghee — is the mountain staple best ordered at local dhabas rather than tourist restaurants. Trout from the Beas and Tirthan rivers appears on menus in Manali and Naggar, prepared pan-fried with local herbs or in a mild yogurt curry. For street food, Johnson's Cafe on Circuit House Road has been the most reliable consistent breakfast address for thirty years. Momos are best from the cluster of stalls behind the Mall Road market — look for the longest queue.
