7-Day Himachal Family Expedition: Toy Trains & Royal Forts
Why choose Best Himachal Family Holiday Package with our Shimla-based experts?
Our 7-Day Himachal Family Expedition is a masterfully curated journey designed to offer multi-generational families a deep, comfortable, and insightful exploration of the Western Himalayas. This expedition bridges the 19th-century colonial legacy of Shimla with the spiritual depth of the Tibetan exile community in McLeod Ganj and the ancient military history of the Kangra Fort. We focus on unique family experiences, such as riding the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla Toy Train—an engineering marvel with 102 surviving tunnels—and exploring the Japanese-style gardens of the Norbulingka Institute. The journey also includes a visit to the sacred Rewalsar Lake, where Buddhist, Hindu, and Sikh traditions have converged for over a millennium. By utilizing private mountain-grade SUVs and expert mountain storytellers, we provide a safe, insightful, and professionally managed holiday, offering a deep perspective on the history, spiritual silence, and royal heritage of Himachal Pradesh.
"We believe that travel in these mountains should never be rushed. Having spent years guiding travelers along these exact roads, my advice is to take the early morning walks when the air is absolutely crisp and local life is just starting. Avoid the generic tourist traps and ask our drivers to stop at the small roadside dhabas for fresh cedar-smoke chai. We don't just plan itineraries—we connect you with the real, unhurried soul of our home."

Day-by-Day Itinerary
The Imperial Ridge: Chandigarh to Shimla 2,206m
Your family expedition begins with a pick-up from Chandigarh. We immediately start our climb through the Shivalik foothills to reach Shimla (2,206m). Check into your family-friendly resort and spend your evening walking the historic Ridge. Storyteller Tip: The Ridge is actually built over a massive 'Water Reservoir' from the 1880s that still supplies the entire town using only gravity. It was designed by British engineers to ensure that the summer capital of India never ran dry, a system that remains perfectly functional even today.
Toy Trains & 1888 Stone Palaces 2,206m
A full day exploring Shimla's heritage. We take a short ride on the UNESCO Toy Train (subject to availability) and visit the Viceregal Lodge, a stunning Jacobethan-style stone palace. Storyteller Tip: The Viceregal Lodge was the first building in all of India to have an internal electricity system in 1888. It's built of local grey sandstone and has survived multiple earthquakes thanks to its unique 'floating' foundation design, an advanced engineering concept for the late 19th century.
The Sacred Confluence: Mandi to McLeod Ganj 1,770m
We transit toward the Kangra valley, stopping at the sacred Rewalsar Lake. Explore the giant Buddha statue and the floating islands of the lake before arriving in McLeod Ganj (1,770m). Storyteller Tip: Rewalsar is a unique 'Tri-Religious' site. The floating islands on the lake are actually mats of reed and soil that move across the water. For Buddhists, they are a sign of the Guru Rinpoche's power; for Hindus, they are associated with the Sage Lomas; and for Sikhs, they mark the visit of Guru Gobind Singh.
Little Lhasa: Spiritual Temples & Art Labs 1,770m
Visit the Tsuglagkhang Complex (the Dalai Lama's temple) and the Norbulingka Institute, a center for the preservation of Tibetan arts. Storyteller Tip: Norbulingka is built in a traditional 'Japanese-Himalayan' style, with water-canals flowing through the workshops to keep the temperature stable for the delicate thangka paintings. Notice the metal-smiths; they use the same 'lost-wax' casting method that has been used in the Himalayas for over a thousand years.
Cricket at 4,700 ft & the Dhauladhar Ridge 1,770m
Visit the HPCA Stadium, one of the world's most beautiful cricket grounds, and take a local forest walk toward the Dhauladhar snowline. Storyteller Tip: The Dharamshala cricket stadium is unique because of its low-profile architecture, designed specifically to not block the view of the snow-clad Dhauladhar peaks for the spectators. It's one of the few places in the world where you can watch an international game with 4,000m peaks as the backdrop.
Ancient Military Gates: The Kangra Fort 321m
We descend to the Kangra Fort, the oldest surviving fort in the Himalayas. Explore the 3,000-year-old stone masonry and the royal temples before our final transit back toward Chandigarh. Storyteller Tip: The Kangra Fort has survived over 52 recorded sieges. Its 'Ahani Gate' was covered in iron plates to prevent war elephants from ramming it down. The Katoch dynasty, who built it, claim to be descendants of the Moon, and their lineage is one of the oldest in the world.
Sukhna Lake & Final Departure Descent
A final morning walk at Chandigarh's Sukhna Lake before your transfer to the airport or station. Storyteller Tip: Chandigarh was the first 'Planned City' in post-independence India, designed by Le Corbusier. The Sukhna Lake is a man-made reservoir that serves as a catchment for the Shivalik hill runoff. It's a perfect example of 1950s modernist hydrology and city planning.
