14-Day Great Himalayan Road Trip: The Complete Himachal & Spiti Circuit
Why choose Great Himalayan Road Trip with our Shimla-based experts?
Local Insider Insight
Expert Tip: September is the golden month for this circuit. The roads are stable post-monsoon, the apple orchards in Kinnaur are at their peak, and the Spiti landscape turns vibrant orange under the autumn sun.
The 14-Day Great Himalayan Road Trip is the definitive overlanding expedition across the North Indian highlands. This professionally curated circuit traverses the entire Himachal sequence, from the colonial heritage of Shimla to the stark, lunar landscapes of the Spiti plateau. The route is designed following a 'Shimla-first' entry strategy, which provides a gradual acclimatization gradient, ascending over seven days before reaching the 4,500m passes. Highlights include the 10th-century Tabo Monastery, the cliff-side citadel of Dhankar, the world's highest post office at Hikkim, and the sacred turquoise waters of Chandratal Lake. Travelers will move in private, high-clearance SUVs supported by experienced mountain coordinators. This expedition offer a comprehensive and safe encounter with the remote frontiers of Kinnaur and Spiti, bridging the gap between ancient trade routes and modern engineering marvels like the Atal Tunnel.
"When I last drove up the winding ascent from Kalka to Shimla, as the sub-tropical pine woods gave way to towering deodar forests, I was reminded of why we call these hills home. For a truly authentic Darshan at the Jakhoo temple, skip the ropeway and hike up the forest trail in the early morning mist. As you drive into the Beas River gorge towards Manali, keep your camera ready for the dramatic granite cliffs near Mandi-Pandoh. In Manali, old Vashisht still holds the soul of the valley—be sure to take a quiet moment near the geothermal hot springs before visiting the ancient timber pagoda of Hadimba Devi."
