Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: 10-Day Journey Across the High Himalayan Passes
Why choose Best Leh Ladakh Bike Expedition with our Shimla-based experts?
There is no road trip in Asia that tests a rider quite like the Manali-Leh-Ladakh circuit. This 10-day expedition strips away the comforts of standard travel and drops you into an environment where oxygen is thin, the sun is fierce, and the roads are notoriously unpredictable. Riding a Royal Enfield Himalayan through this high-altitude desert is a physical and mental challenge that rewards you with landscapes of unimaginable scale.\n\nYou'll battle the infamous water crossings of the Shyok River and lean into the grueling 21 switchbacks of the Gata Loops. As you throttle up to the 17,582 ft summit of Khardung La, your engine will gasp for air just as hard as you do. But the brutal terrain is offset by moments of profound stillness—waking up to the sapphire surface of Pangong Lake or watching wild Tibetan asses (Kiangs) gallop across the vast, empty More Plains. With a dedicated mechanic truck trailing your convoy and portable oxygen on standby, you can push your limits knowing the safety net is solid.
"We believe that travel in these mountains should never be rushed. Having spent years guiding travelers along these exact roads, my advice is to take the early morning walks when the air is absolutely crisp and local life is just starting. Avoid the generic tourist traps and ask our drivers to stop at the small roadside dhabas for fresh cedar-smoke chai. We don't just plan itineraries—we connect you with the real, unhurried soul of our home."

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Welcome to Leh: The mandatory rest day 3,500m
Your trip begins as you land at Leh airport (3,500m). Because of the sudden jump in altitude, our safety rules require a full 24-hour rest. This is very important to help your body adjust to the thin air. Spend your day relaxing at the hotel, drinking plenty of water, and enjoying light meals. In the evening, we’ll have a group briefing about the journey ahead and introduce you to your Royal Enfield Himalayan bikes. Altitude: 3,500m.
Local Warm-up: Magnetic Hill & Confluence 3,500m
Today is for a short 'warm-up' ride to get used to the bikes and the mountain turns. We’ll ride 50km to see the Magnetic Hill and the Sangam (confluence) of the Indus and Zanskar rivers. We’ll also stop at the Hall of Fame to pay respects to the mountain warriors and visit the peaceful Shanti Stupa in the evening. This short ride helps us check the bikes and ensures everyone is comfortable before we head to the high passes. Altitude: 3,500m.
The High Pass: Khardung La to Nubra Valley (120km) 3,048m
Get ready for a big day! We climb up to the world's highest motorable pass, Khardung La (5,359m). We’ll spend a short time at the top for photos before descending into the beautiful Nubra Valley. In the afternoon, explore the white sand dunes of Hunder and take a ride on the unique double-humped Bactrian camels. Enjoy a warm dinner at your desert camp. Altitude: 3,048m to 5,359m.
The River Run: Nubra to Pangong Lake (150km) 4,350m
Instead of going back to Leh, we take the adventurous Shyok river route. We start early to cross the mountain streams before the ice melts too much. It's a technical ride through rugged riverbeds. By afternoon, the first glimpse of the sapphire-blue Pangong Lake (4,350m) will appear. Spend your evening by the water, watching the lake change colors as the sun sets. Altitude: 4,350m.
Remote Highlands: Pangong to Tso Moriri (240km) 4,522m
Today we head deep into the Changthang plateau toward Tso Moriri. This is a long and remote ride through vast salt plains and high-altitude wildlife zones. You might spot wild Tibetan asses (Kiangs) running alongside your bikes. Reach the sacred Tso Moriri lake (4,522m) by evening and experience absolute silence. This is one of the most peaceful spots in the Himalayas. Altitude: 4,522m.
Return to Leh: Hot Springs & River Valleys (210km) 3,500m
We follow the mighty Indus river back toward Leh. We’ll stop at Chumathang to see the natural boiling hot springs right on the riverbank—a great place for a warm lunch. Arrive in Leh by evening and enjoy a relaxed stroll through the local market. Our mechanic will perform a full service on your bikes tonight to prepare for the long highway descent ahead. Altitude: 3,500m.
The Long Descent: Leh to Sarchu (250km) 4,290m
We leave Leh and start our journey south on the famous Manali-Leh highway. Today we cross the high Tanglang La pass (5,328m) and then open the throttle on the vast, dead-straight More Plains at 15,000 feet. Reach Sarchu, the border of Ladakh and Himachal, by evening. Spend your night in high-altitude tents. Tip: Sarchu is cold and thin on air, so drink plenty of warm fluids tonight. Altitude: 4,290m.
The 21 Hairpins: Sarchu to Jispa (140km) 3,200m
Get ready for the Gata Loops—21 sharp switchbacks that drop you from the high plateau. Next, we climb the often snow-covered Baralacha La pass (4,890m) before descending into the lush Lahaul valley. Arrive at the beautiful village of Jispa by the riverside. After days in the dry desert, the greenery and fresh air of Jispa will feel amazing. Altitude: 3,200m.
The Tunnel Dash: Jispa to Manali (100km) 2,050m
Our final riding day! We follow the Chandra river and drive through the amazing 9km Atal Tunnel. Passing through the tunnel is like magic—you enter a brown stone desert and emerge into the lush pine forests of Manali. Reach your hotel by afternoon and celebrate the completion of the 10-day loop with a special farewell dinner. Altitude: 2,050m.
Farewell to the Mountains: Departure Varies
Enjoy a final mountain breakfast before our driver takes you to the Manali bus stand or Bhuntar airport. You’ll leave with the 'Himalayan Dust' on your gear and memories of high passes in your heart. Your 10-day Ladakh bike journey concludes here. Safe travels! Altitude: Descent to 1,100m.
