Chandratal Moon Lake: 6-Day High-Altitude Spiti Expedition
Why choose chandratal lake camping tour spiti with our Shimla-based experts?
Local Insider Insight
Chandratal's color shifts from emerald green to deep cobalt as the sun arcs over the CB-13 and CB-14 peaks. Wake up at 5:15 AM for the 3.5 km circumambulation (parikrama) path when the lake surface is glass-still, creating a mirror reflection of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
The 6-Day Chandratal Moon Lake Expedition is a professionally curated high-altitude journey into the raw, celestial landscape of the Spiti desert. Chandratal, or the 'Moon Lake', is a sacred turquoise crescent located at 4,250m, cradled by the Chandra-Bhaga mountain range. This expedition follows a strict 'Acclimatization Ladder' protocol, with mandatory altitude adaptation stops in Manali and Batal to mitigate the risks of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). The itinerary features a technical transit through the 9.02km Atal Tunnel and navigation of the rugged, boulder-strewn corridors of the Lahaul Valley. Stays are arranged in verified premium alpine tents near the lake sanctuary, offering zero-pollution night skies for high-altitude stargazing. With private SUV transits and expert on-ground monitoring, this expedition ensures a safe and authoritative encounter with the geological and spiritual frontiers of Spiti.

"When I last drove up the winding ascent from Kalka to Shimla, as the sub-tropical pine woods gave way to towering deodar forests, I was reminded of why we call these hills home. For a truly authentic Darshan at the Jakhoo temple, skip the ropeway and hike up the forest trail in the early morning mist. As you drive into the Beas River gorge towards Manali, keep your camera ready for the dramatic granite cliffs near Mandi-Pandoh. In Manali, old Vashisht still holds the soul of the valley—be sure to take a quiet moment near the geothermal hot springs before visiting the ancient timber pagoda of Hadimba Devi."

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Delhi/Chandigarh to Manali | Beas Valley Gateway 2,050m
Pickup from Delhi/Chandigarh in your private mountain-grade SUV. Drive along the scenic Beas River valley via Mandi and the 3km Aut Tunnel. Arrive in Manali (2,050m) by late afternoon. Spend a relaxed evening walking through Old Manali cafes or resting to prepare for the high-altitude transits ahead. Tip: Stash warm layers in your easily accessible daypack since temperatures drop significantly as soon as you cross the Atal Tunnel tomorrow.
Day 2: Manali to Kaza via Atal Tunnel & Kunzum Pass (4,551m) 4,551m (Kunzum Pass)
Cross the 9.02km Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, emerging from green deodar forests into barren alpine riverbeds. Drive past the rugged glacier crossings of Gramphoo, Chhatru, and Batal. Ascend the steep switchbacks of Kunzum Pass (4,551m) — the mighty divide between Lahaul and Spiti. Step out to circumambulate the colorful Kunzum Mata Stupa for blessings, taking in 360-degree views of the CB Range glaciers. Descend into the Spiti Valley past Losar to reach Kaza (3,800m). Tip: The Chhatru-Batal stretch has raw water crossings (pagal nallahs); an experienced hill driver and high-clearance vehicle are indispensable here.
Day 3: Kee Monastery & Vertigo at Chicham Suspension Bridge 4,270m
Morning visit to the magnificent Kee Gompa (4,166m), Spiti largest monastery founded in the 11th century. Climb up to the rooftop terrace for panoramic views over the braided Spiti River bed. Proceed through high pastures to Kibber village (4,270m) and drive across the jaw-dropping Chicham Bridge, suspended 150m over a bottomless rocky gorge. Keep an eye out for Himalayan blue sheep grazing along the crags. Tip: Visit the monk kitchen inside Kee to taste authentic butter tea and receive a personalized blessing string.
Day 4: High Plateaus: Hikkim Post Office, Komic & Langza Fossils 4,587m (Komic)
A full-day excursion exploring the highest settlements on the planet. Post hand-written letters home from Hikkim (4,400m) at the world highest post office. Ascend to Komic (4,587m) for lunch at the world highest motorable restaurant, and tour the 14th-century Tangyud Monastery. Continue to Langza (4,400m), framed by the colossal golden Buddha statue and the snow-capped peak of Chau Chau Kang Nilda. Walk the fossil beds in search of prehistoric marine remains (ammonites). Tip: Do not purchase original fossils from children to preserve the geological heritage; photographs are the best souvenirs.
Day 5: Kaza to Chandratal Moon Lake | Alpine Camping under the Stars 4,250m
Depart Kaza and head back towards the Chandra Valley to reach the mystical Chandratal Lake (4,250m). Park at the vehicle turnaround and enjoy a gentle 1.5km trek across wildflowers to the lake shore. The crescent-shaped body of water shifts colors throughout the day from emerald green to deep turquoise. In the evening, check into premium dome camping tents at the designated campsite (3km from the lake). Experience surreal stargazing under unpolluted Himalayan skies where the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Tip: Camping directly on the lake shore is banned by court order to protect the fragile wetland ecology; our verified camps provide heavy sleeping bags and heated dining tents.
Day 6: Chandratal to Manali / Chandigarh | Final Mountain Descent Descent to Plains
Wake up to crisp alpine sunrise views over the Chandra River basin. After hot chai and breakfast, begin the descent across Batal and Chhatru. Stop at the famous Chacha-Chachi dhaba in Batal for warm dal chawal and travel stories. Re-enter the Atal Tunnel and descend through the lush green Kullu Valley back towards Chandigarh or Delhi for your onward journey. Tip: Start before 7:30 AM to cross early morning stream swells before daytime glacial melting increases water flow.
