10-Day Trans-Himalayan Expedition: Srinagar to Leh Master-Traverse
Why choose Leh Ladakh with Kashmir Tour Package with our Shimla-based experts?
Local Insider Insight
During the critical Kargil acclimatization stopover, most operators rush tourists straight through to Leh without stopping. Instead, request your driver to stop at the Mulbekh Monastery — a 9th-century rock-cut Buddhist sculpture carved directly into a cliff face near Mulbekh village, just 30 minutes east of Kargil. This 9-meter tall statue of Maitreya Buddha is one of the finest examples of early Tibetan Buddhist rock-cut art in the region and is completely bypassed by 95% of tours on this route. The roadside chai shop here also serves the best salt tea (gurgur cha) on the entire Srinagar-Leh highway, made with yak butter and served by Ladakhi women in traditional goncha dresses.
Our 10-Day Trans-Himalayan Expedition is a master-traverse designed for travelers who seek to understand the profound geological and cultural divide between the Western and Trans-Himalayas. This journey moves from the lush, water-rich Jhelum basin of Kashmir to the high-altitude cold desert of the Ladakh plateau. We explore the 'Zoji La Rain-Shadow Divide'—the dramatic point where the monsoon clouds are blocked by the mountains, creating the stark landscape shift that defines the Tibetan plateau. This expedition features the 'Moonland' geomorphology of Lamayuru, the 17,582ft Khardung La high-pass, and the 134km long trans-border Pangong Lake. We prioritize your physiological safety through a structured acclimatization schedule and oxygen-equipped mountain SUVs. From the 11th-century frescoes of Alchi to the 9km engineering marvel of the Atal Tunnel, this is the definitive trans-Himalayan odyssey, offering a professional, safe, and deeply insightful encounter with the 'Roof of the World'.
"We believe that travel in these mountains should never be rushed. Having spent years guiding travelers along these exact roads, my advice is to take the early morning walks when the air is absolutely crisp and local life is just starting. Avoid the generic tourist traps and ask our drivers to stop at the small roadside dhabas for fresh cedar-smoke chai. We don't just plan itineraries—we connect you with the real, unhurried soul of our home."

Day-by-Day Itinerary
The Jhelum Basin: Arrival & the Silent Lake 1,585m
Your expedition begins with an arrival in Srinagar (1,585m) and a transfer to a heritage cedar houseboat on Nigeen Lake. Storyteller Tip: Nigeen Lake is part of the valley's ancient hydrology, fed by the high-altitude Zabarwan springs. Starting your journey here provides a peaceful psychological orientation before we tackle the high-pass crossings of the trans-Himalayan desert.
The Zoji La Divide: Srinagar to Kargil 2,676m
Drive east via Sonmarg and cross the Zoji La pass (3,528m) to reach Kargil. Storyteller Tip: Zoji La is not just a pass; it is a major climatic divide. It acts as a massive wall that blocks the moisture-laden clouds from the Arabian Sea, creating the 'Rain Shadow' effect. Notice how the lush green forests of Kashmir disappear within minutes of crossing the pass, replaced by the barren, brown stone of the Ladakh plateau.
Moonlands & Monasteries: Kargil to Leh 3,500m
Transit to Leh (3,500m) via the Lamayuru 'Moonland' and Alchi Monastery. Storyteller Tip: The white, crater-like formations at Lamayuru are 'lacustrine' deposits—remnants of a prehistoric lake that dried up millions of years ago. We also visit Alchi, one of the few monasteries in the world built on flat ground, featuring 11th-century frescoes that reflect a unique blend of Kashmiri and Tibetan artistic styles.
Acclimatization & the Indus Heritage 3,500m
A day for mandatory rest and local exploration in Leh. Visit the Thiksey Monastery and the Shanti Stupa. Storyteller Tip: Thiksey Monastery is often called the 'Little Potala' due to its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa. It is built on a hillside-fortress logic, allowing for 360-degree surveillance of the Indus valley. This rest day is critical for your body to adjust to the 3,500m altitude before tomorrow's 17,582ft crossing.
The 17,582ft High-Pass: Leh to Nubra Valley 3,048m to 5,359m
Ascend the Khardung La (5,359m) and descend into the Nubra valley. Storyteller Tip: At the summit of Khardung La, the partial pressure of oxygen is only about 50% of that at sea level. We limit our stop here to 15 minutes to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness. As we descend into Nubra, notice the sudden appearance of sand dunes—a rare cold-desert phenomenon at 10,000 ft.
Silk Road Legacies: Hunder Dunes & Camels 3,048m
Explore the Hunder sand dunes and the Diskit Monastery. Storyteller Tip: The Bactrian (double-humped) camels you see here are a living legacy of the ancient Silk Road. They were the primary mode of transport for caravans coming from Central Asia. These camels are unique in the world, capable of surviving temperatures as low as -40°C in the winter and +40°C in the summer.
Endorheic Basins: Shyok to Pangong Tso 4,350m
Drive via the Shyok river route to the 134km long Pangong Lake (4,350m). Storyteller Tip: Pangong Tso is an 'Endorheic' basin, meaning it has no outflow to any river or sea. The water remains saline because the minerals brought by glacial melt have accumulated over millions of years with no way to escape. The intense blue of the water is a result of the high-altitude light scattering through this mineral-rich brine.
The Chang La Ridge: Pangong to Leh 3,500m
Sunrise at the lake followed by a return to Leh via the Chang La pass (5,360m). Storyteller Tip: Chang La is the world's third-highest motorable pass. We visit the Hemis Monastery on the way back—the wealthiest and most significant monastery of the Drukpa lineage in Ladakh. Its museum contains one of the world's most important collections of Buddhist thangkas and artifacts.
The More Plains: Leh to Sarchu 4,290m
Begin the high-altitude descent towards Manali, crossing the Tanglang La (5,328m). Storyteller Tip: We traverse the 'More Plains'—a 40km stretch of flat plateau that sits at 4,800m. This is a rare geological plateau that was once part of the Tethys sea floor. It offers the most spectacular 'big-sky' views in the Himalayas, mimicking the landscape of the main Tibetan plateau to the east.
Atal Tunnel & the Beas Basin: Final Descent Descent
Cross the Baralacha La (4,890m) and the 9km Atal Tunnel to reach Manali. Storyteller Tip: The Atal Tunnel is the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 ft. It cuts through the Rohtang massif, allowing us to descend from the cold desert of Lahaul into the lush Beas basin of Manali in just 10 minutes. We conclude our expedition here, having traversed the full tectonic and cultural spectrum of the North Indian Himalayas.
