Day-by-Day Itinerary
Gateway to the Hills: Dimapur to Kohima (74km) 1,444m
Your adventure begins as our driver meets you at the Dimapur airport or station. We drive through the lush green Zubza gorge to reach Kohima (1,444m), the capital of Nagaland. We’ll handle your permit checks at the border to make it easy for you. After checking into a boutique homestay, enjoy a briefing session on the trek and 'Leave No Trace' mountain rules. Spend your evening exploring the local Naga market and trying some traditional snacks. Altitude: 1,444m.
Ridge Ascent: Viswema Trail to Dzukou (25km Drive + 5hr Trek) 2,452m
After a hearty breakfast, we drive to the Viswema village trailhead. We begin our 5-6 hour hike through a beautiful forest of oak and pine. The first hour is a climb through stone stairs, but it soon opens up into a gentle walk along the scenic ridge covered in dwarf bamboo. Reach the Dzukou base camp (2,452m) by late afternoon. We’ll set up high-quality mountain tents for you to enjoy the cold, fresh mountain air. Watch the clouds roll over the green mounds of the valley below. Altitude: 2,452m.
Exploring the Valley Floor: Lilies & Streams 2,400m
Today is for exploring the heart of the valley. We descend to the flat valley floor, walking among the unique rolling hills that look like green velvet. Cross the crystal-clear perennial streams and visit the natural rock caves. If you're visiting in the monsoon (June-August), you'll see the valley covered in the pink-and-white Dzukou Lilies. In the afternoon, we head back up to the ridge to watch a spectacular mountain sunset. Enjoy a warm meal prepared by our mountain cooks. Altitude: 2,400m.
The Steep Descent & Heading Home (3hr Trek + Drive) Varies
Wake up early for one last sunrise over the valley. We begin our final descent through the Jakhama trail. This path is much steeper than Viswema and uses ancient stone steps that lead you quickly back to the valley floor. Keep your camera ready as the forest canopy changes dramatically with the altitude. Reach Jakhama village where our SUV will be waiting to take you back to Dimapur. We’ll drop you at the airport or station for your evening departure. Altitude: Descent to 96m.
