The 6-Day Dhankar Fortress & Lake Expedition is a professionally curated audit of the medieval history of the Spiti Kingdom. For eight centuries, the cliffside village of Dhankar served as the royal seat of power, strategically positioned overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers. This itinerary focuses on the 'Medieval Citadel and High-Altitude Hydrology' of the region, featuring the 1,200-year-old Dhankar Monastery—a significant mud-and-stone monument. The expedition utilizes a strict acclimatization protocol with mandatory stays in Narkanda and Kalpa before ascending to the 3,890m altitude of Dhankar. Highlights include a guided trek to the sacred glacial Dhankar Lake (4,140m) and an exploration of the 1,000-year-old Tabo Monastery. With private SUV transits and stays in handpicked heritage homestays, this expedition offers an authoritative perspective on the spiritual and royal frontiers of Spiti.

"When I last drove up the winding ascent from Kalka to Shimla, as the sub-tropical pine woods gave way to towering deodar forests, I was reminded of why we call these hills home. For a truly authentic Darshan at the Jakhoo temple, skip the ropeway and hike up the forest trail in the early morning mist. As you drive into the Beas River gorge towards Manali, keep your camera ready for the dramatic granite cliffs near Mandi-Pandoh. In Manali, old Vashisht still holds the soul of the valley—be sure to take a quiet moment near the geothermal hot springs before visiting the ancient timber pagoda of Hadimba Devi."

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Chandigarh to Narkanda | Himalayan Ridge Ascent 2,700m
Morning pickup from Chandigarh airport/station. Drive up the Shivalik foothills via the Himalayan Expressway, passing Solan and the Shimla bypass to reach Narkanda (2,700m). Enjoy panoramic views of the Greater Himalayan peaks from Hatu Peak (3,400m). Overnight stay in Narkanda to begin gradual acclimatization. Tip: Try the local Himachali apple juice at roadside orchards near Theog.
Day 2: Narkanda to Kalpa | Kinnaur Valley Transit 2,960m
Follow the roaring Satluj River through the deep gorge of Kinnaur. Pass through Rampur and the rock-cut tunnels of Wangtoo before climbing to the apple haven of Kalpa (2,960m). Stand in awe of the massive Kinner Kailash massif (6,050m) rising directly across the valley. Evening walk through the traditional Kath-Kuni wood-and-stone houses of Chini village. Tip: The sunset light on the sacred Shiva rock of Kinner Kailash is unbeatable between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM.
Day 3: Kalpa to Tabo & Dhankar | Entering Ancient Buddhist Sanctuaries 3,894m
Transit past the Khab river confluence into the Spiti cold desert. Arrive in Tabo (3,280m) to explore the UNESCO-recognized 996 AD Tabo Monastery, famous as the Ajanta of the Himalayas for its 1,000-year-old preserved murals and stucco statues. Continue ascending to the cliff-hanging citadel of Dhankar (3,894m), the ancient capital of the Spiti kingdom built atop fragile mud pinnacles. Overnight stay in Dhankar or nearby homestay. Tip: Enter the old prayer halls of Tabo without flash photography to preserve the ancient natural vegetable pigments.
Day 4: Dhankar Monastery & High-Altitude Lake Hike 4,140m (Dhankar Lake Summit)
Start the morning exploring the dramatic Dhankar Gompa, built precariously on a razor-sharp cliff edge overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers. Embark on a rewarding 1.5-hour trek (2.5km) to the crystal-clear Dhankar Lake (4,140m). The high-altitude lake mirrors the snow-capped Manirang peak (6,593m) in its turquoise waters. Descend in the afternoon and drive to Kaza (3,800m). Tip: The Dhankar Lake trail has loose gravel; wear hiking shoes with good ankle support and take slow, rhythmic steps to conserve breath.
Day 5: Kaza to Pin Valley | National Park & Mud Village Expedition 3,810m
Drive into the pristine Pin Valley National Park, the green oasis of Spiti known as the home of the snow leopard and ibex. Visit the 14th-century Kungri Monastery of the Nyingmapa Buddhist sect. Continue to the last motorable settlement of Mud Village (3,810m), surrounded by dramatic red-hued sedimentary mountains and barley fields. Enjoy a traditional Spitian lunch in a local homestay before returning to Kaza. Tip: Pin Valley is significantly colder and windier than Kaza; keep windcheater jackets handy.
Day 6: Kaza to Chandigarh Descent via Atal Tunnel Descent to Plains
Depart early via Losar, Kunzum Pass (4,551m), Batal, and Chhatru along the Chandra River bed. Enter the 9.02km Atal Tunnel and emerge directly into the verdant Kullu Valley. Continue the smooth four-lane highway descent through Mandi and Bilaspur, arriving in Chandigarh by late evening for your onward flight or train. Tip: The contrast between the dry Tibetan desert and green Kullu Valley through Atal Tunnel is one of the most dramatic 15-minute landscape shifts on earth.
