Why choose Nako Lake & Monastery Tour from Delhi with our Shimla-based experts?

Local Insider Insight

For photographs, walk to the eastern shore of Nako Lake before sunrise. The high-altitude winds start by 8 AM creating ripples that disturb reflection shots. Early morning gives perfect reflections of the village, monastery, and surrounding peaks.

The 6-Day Nako Lake & Monastery Expedition is a professionally curated journey into the high-altitude frontier of Upper Kinnaur, situated on the edge of the Tibetan plateau. At 3,662m (12,014 ft), Nako represents a unique ecological and cultural oasis, centered around its sacred glacial lake and a 1,000-year-old monastery complex. This itinerary is logistically engineered for safe acclimatization, utilizing a 'ladder protocol' with mandatory overnight stays in Narkanda and Kalpa before reaching the arid trans-Himalayan zone. Highlights include a guided audit of the 1025 AD mud-monastery murals, a walk through the well-preserved stone-labyrinth heritage of the village, and an observation of the Khab confluence. With private mountain-grade SUV transits and handpicked local residencies, this expedition provides an authoritative exploration of the spiritual and geological silence of the high Himalayas.

Field Journal Verified Local Expert Note Nako, Kinnaur

"When I last drove up the winding ascent from Kalka to Shimla, as the sub-tropical pine woods gave way to towering deodar forests, I was reminded of why we call these hills home. For a truly authentic Darshan at the Jakhoo temple, skip the ropeway and hike up the forest trail in the early morning mist. As you drive into the Beas River gorge towards Manali, keep your camera ready for the dramatic granite cliffs near Mandi-Pandoh. In Manali, old Vashisht still holds the soul of the valley—be sure to take a quiet moment near the geothermal hot springs before visiting the ancient timber pagoda of Hadimba Devi."

What's the best time to visit Nako?

May to October is the ideal window. The road from Shimla via Reckong Peo is open by April, but Nako itself is at 3,600 meters and can still be cold in early May. July to September offers the most stable weather with daytime temperatures of 12-18°C. October is spectacular for autumn colors in the Kinnaur apple orchards, though evenings get cold (2-5°C). Winter (November to April) sees heavy snow and road closures.

What kind of accommodation can I expect in Nako?

Nako is a small, remote village — don't expect luxury hotels. We carefully select the best available options: premium guesthouses with attached bathrooms, hot water (via solar heaters — plan morning showers), and thick blankets for the cold nights. Most properties offer simple but clean rooms with spectacular views of the lake or valley. The hospitality of the local families more than compensates for the modest facilities.

Is this trip suitable for families with children?

Nako is at 3,600 meters, so altitude is a consideration. We recommend this trip for families with children aged 12 and above who can handle the elevation. The walking is gentle — mostly around the lake and village — and the cultural experience is incredibly rich for young travelers. We carry oxygen cylinders and our drivers are trained in AMS recognition.

What food is available in Nako?

Most guesthouses serve simple, wholesome meals: dal, rice, roti, seasonal vegetables, and Tibetan-influenced dishes like momos and thukpa. The local specialty is 'Siddu' — steamed bread stuffed with poppy seeds, served with ghee and chutney. We recommend carrying some of your favorite snacks and tea bags from home, as options in the village are limited but satisfying.

What should I pack for this trip?

Pack warm layers (temperatures can drop to 5°C even in summer), comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen (the high-altitude sun is intense), sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and a reusable water bottle. If travelling in winter (Oct-Mar), add thermal wear, gloves, a warm hat, and a heavy down jacket. Don't forget your camera!
