Your trip begins with a pick-up from Hospet railway station or Jindal Vidyanagar airport. We’ll take you to your heritage resort near the ruins. In the afternoon, we head straight to the Hampi heartland. Visit the ancient Virupaksha Temple, which has been active for over 1,300 years, and walk through the Hampi Bazaar. Spend your evening watching a beautiful sunset from the Hemakuta Hill, overlooking the vast boulder-strewn landscape. Enjoy a traditional South Indian dinner. Altitude: 467m.
Stone Wonders: Vitthala Temple & Royal Enclosure 467m
Spend a full day exploring the grand ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire. We start at the Vitthala Temple complex to see the world-famous Stone Chariot and the musical pillars. Next, visit the Royal Enclosure, the Lotus Mahal, and the grand Elephant Stables. In the afternoon, enjoy a peaceful coracle boat ride (traditional round boat) on the Tungabhadra river to see the hidden carvings along the banks. The Road to Badami: Gorges & Cliffs (140km) 586m
After a fresh breakfast, we drive north toward the red sandstone cliffs of Badami (140km). Arrive by afternoon and check into your heritage hotel. In the late afternoon, we visit the famous Badami Caves. These four caves are carved directly into the mountain and feature some of the best 6th-century carvings in India. See the 18-armed dancing Shiva and the serene Jain statues. Watch the sunset over the Bhutanatha Temple by the Agastya Lake. Altitude: 586m.
Cradle of Architecture: Aihole & Pattadakal (35km) 586m
Today we explore the birthplaces of Indian temple design. We start in Aihole, a village filled with over 100 ancient temples, including the unique horseshoe-shaped Durga Temple. Next, we head to the UNESCO site of Pattadakal (14km away). This was the coronation site for ancient kings and features grand temples with incredibly detailed stone work. Return to Badami for a relaxed evening and perhaps some shopping for local Ilkal sarees. Altitude: 586m.
Sacred Springs & Heading Home Descent to 550m
On your final morning, visit the quiet Mahakuta group of temples, known for its natural spring-fed tank and ancient shrines hidden in a grove. After a final traditional breakfast, our driver will take you to Hubballi (105km) for your airport or railway station link.
