Your trip begins with a pick-up at Hubballi airport or railway station. We’ll drive you through the scenic plains of the Deccan toward Badami. After checking into a heritage hotel overlooking the Agastya Lake, we’ll visit the famous Badami Caves. These four caves are carved directly into the red sandstone cliffs and feature incredible 6th-century carvings. See the masterful Nataraja statue and the serene figures of ancient kings and gods. In the evening, watch the sunset at the Bhutanatha Temple, where the rocks reflect a beautiful red glow on the water. Enjoy a traditional North Karnataka dinner. Altitude: 586m.
Ancient Blueprints: Aihole & Pattadakal (35km) 586m
Today we explore the two nearby heritage hubs. We start in Aihole, which was like a 'laboratory' for ancient architects. Visit the unique Durga Temple and learn about the experimental designs used by early builders. Next, we head to the UNESCO site of Pattadakal (14km away). This was the coronation site for Chalukyan kings and features some of the most beautiful temples in India. Observe the detailed carvings and the signatures of the master sculptors on the walls. Sacred Springs & Heading Home 586m
On your final morning, visit the quiet Mahakuta group of temples. This peaceful 7th-century site is famous for its natural spring-fed tank where you can see ancient carvings underwater. After a fresh local breakfast, we’ll stop at a local weaver cooperative where you can see the famous Ilkal sarees being made.
